Pear size is based on the number of pears that fit in a standarized box designed to hold 4/5 bushel of pears. Sizes generally run from the large 60 count to the small 150 count. A range of packaging is used by the industry, all of which reference the same fruit size standards.
Besides a full carton of 40-44 lbs, pears can be purchased in multiple pack sizes, including half cartons, 2-5 lb bagged pears, and trays with multiple pears. Ask the shipper or distributor for availability of unique packs for greater variety for end-users.
Before placing pears in the box, they are individually wrapped by hand with thin tissue paper then carefully packed into boxes with a plastic liner, or placed on fitted trays. The boxes are stamped with size, variety, grade, and other packing information.
